How to paint a scene (little or no Photos)

How to paint a scene

Use this “formula” to create layouts for memories that have no (or few) photos. Use journaling to “paint” the picture, instead of the camera! You can also use these tips to create layouts on roles not included in the chapters that follow, a sort of “build-your-own-role” section.

The setting of the event is your canvas.

Where does your story take place? Your home? A restaurant? Your school? What does the room or the landscape look like? Describe the furnishings, decorations, or any landmarks.

Use your senses!

What do you hear in this place?

What do you see? Turn around 360º, and describe what is behind you, to the side, above you, and below you.

What do you taste?

What do you feel? Is it warm or cool in this place? Is anything slick, hard, soft, fuzzy? Do you associate any fabrics with this place or event?

Who is with you? What is their relationship to you? Who is not there? Are there any strangers around you? Describe their clothing, speech, and mannerisms.

Any good story has a plot.

	What action is taking place?
	What’s the background of the story? Why are these people gathered together? How often do they get together?
	What’s the most exciting thing that happened on this occasion? What’s the “climax” of the story?
	What happened afterward?

Bring it on home! (Offer insight gained by hindsight)

	What was the best thing about that time/event/place? What didn’t you like?
	What did you admire about the people involved?
	What did you learn by participating?
	How did it affect you, and make you the person you are today?

Responses to all these questions will paint a vivid picture of your memories. If you don’t have photos, your journaling can help someone visualize what it was like to be there, even if they don’t have the visual “cues” to help them. Without photos (or with very few photos), you’ll have to take a cue from the memory itself for ideas on how to decorate your page. Personally, I’m a big fan of simply matting the journaling on cardstock, placing that on a patterned background, and calling it done! But, if you would like to add a little more “visual interest”, you can find various decorative elements to help illustrate the main theme of the story. You can use die cuts or paper-piecing patterns to give the basic idea of what the story is about.

We often create layouts based on fabulous pictures that make us smile. The photos make the entire layout. But sometimes the photos just aren’t there; sometimes we have just the memories. I strongly encourage you to make pages about those precious memories anyway. The stories are all there, just waiting for you to paint the picture.

Scrapbook Size:

"What is the best albums size for your needs?"
Scrapbooking albums come in all shapes and sizes. There is no one specific album size that is "best" to use, but here are some tips on the various sizes available:

The 12 x 12 papers are readily available and this particular size seems to be a good size to fit pictures and other memorabilia on the pages without too much crowding. You can also buy ready-to-make pages kits in the 12 x 12 size.
If you want a smaller size book go with a 9 x 9 or 6 x 6 size. These sizes are great for children to start with because they are smaller and easier to work with for tiny hands. The 8 1/2 x 11 size is becoming almost obsolete. There are not many scrapbook papers available in that size anymore and the industry seems to be steering away from the 8 1/2 x 11 size and going to the square sizes instead.

As a devoted scrapper, you probably gain satisfaction from scrapbooking about others. Oftentimes, you are the one glaring missing light in your scrapbook albums, simply because you're so caught up with hiding behind the camera and being a fixated shutterbug. Somehow, it's happening too frequently.

Ever thought about why you should take a step back and start scrapbooking about yourself? Ever wonder how scrapbooking about "you" could bring out the shine in you? Come on, you are special; there's no way to deny it. Rare like a diamond. Just probably covered up in layers and needed some polishing to bring out the natural shine. And scrapbooking is a powerful method to reveal the rareness in you.

There are so many glowing benefits to creating scrapbooks all about you:

1) Leave Behind an Everlasting Legacy
For the people who will never get the chance of meeting and knowing you, your scrapbooks about yourself will leave behind memories of you as a person. It's a mean of letting them discover and know about you.

I once read of a mother who was seized with terminal stage of cancer. In her final days, instead of resting, she struggled to put together scrapbook albums of herself. Why? Just so that her two very young toddlers will get to know about the mommy whom they'll never see in person again. The scrapbooks will be constant reminders to the kids of their mommy's love for them and her thoughts about them. It's a heart-wrenching story, but it's a wake up call that you don't have an eternity. You have to take steps now to make time to leave behind a part of who you are. Like they said, "You'll never know"...

2) Show the World You as an Individual
Yes, besides being known as the scrapbooker who so lovingly and tenderly put together the family scrapbooks, your children and present or future grandchildren would want to know how you look like. They'll wonder "How did Granny Kate look when she's a baby? And what did she look like when she's a young woman?"

You're likely to have the same curiosity of your ancestors too. So showcase your changing faces or appearances throughout the years or decades. Come out from behind your camera, and ask or plead with someone else to take over the role of the photographer. You are important and you need to be in those pages.

3) Reveal the Real You
By scrapbooking, you'll immortalize a part of yourself in a permanent way. And through reading your journaling, others will get to know you in an intimate sort of way. You are granting them permission to be privy to your inner world of thoughts, which are usually hidden by the superficialities of your daily life. Your journaling will reveal the authentic side of you that many may not have the privilege to know of otherwise.

Do consider leaving those alluring computer fonts aside for a while, and write in your own handwriting. It may not be perfect but it's much more personal. Your handwriting is undeniably a part of you.

4) Pass on Your Beliefs and Values
Worried that your values and beliefs will be lost forever to your future generations? Scrapbooking about them is a great way to ensure that they'll get passed on from one generation to the next. "Great-grandma Emily is a strong believer of filial piety. It's her strongest trait..." Your scrapbook albums will likely become treasured family keepsakes, where your words will echo and impact on your future generations’ lives.

5) Pull You Out from a Crossroad
There are probably times in your life when you feel uncertain and lost about yourself. It's like your identity has gone missing. I've been at such a crossroad before too. At such disheartening moments, try scrapbooking on themes like "What Makes Me So Unique", "The Many Hats That I wear" and "Top 10 Things that I'm Most Proud". These themes will once again call attention to your own uniqueness. Such meaningful pages will reinforce the value in you as an individual. If you're daring enough, try "10 Things I Like About You". This is where you'll have to get a couple of your closest kin and friends to each make a list of things they like about you. You'll have to cast away your shyness and get those lists from the people you care about.

Then someday when you feel like you're in the dumps, pull out these precious little lists, read over them and call to your mind that you are wanted and loved by others. Instead of dwelling on your failures and imperfections, these powerful lists will push you forward and make you look at the positive traits of yourself.

6) Pump Yourself Up with Pride
When you're done with some scrapbooks on yourself, flip through them occasionally. You'll find yourself looking at you with a renewed sense of respect and pride. Be it as a mother, nurturer, wife, partner, daughter, sister, colleague or dreamer, your scrapbook albums will showcase you in different roles. It'll tell others that you aren't merely just a mom. The pages will remind you that you have meaningful contributions to make in various roles.

May 18-20, on the 17th, we will hold an early bird contest. You don’t have to crop on the evening of the 17th, but those who do will get an incentive.
The winner of the contest will be randomly drawn on Monday Morning.

May 17 - Early bird challenge - We will be posting a challenge to be completed that day, and that day only. Your entry for May 17, will get an extra entry into the grand prize drawing and I will pick a random winner to recieve a small gift. This challenge will be posted in the early morning hours, must be completed by 11:30pm est.

All Other Crop Challenges will be posted May 18, you have til the 20th of May at 11:30pm est to upload them and post them to the galleries.

On Feb 23, 2007, we will be having a crop at my house in the Jacksonville/Orange Park area of florida. This will be our first 'in house' Crop a Latte (cofee and potluck crop). We will meet once a month from 6pm til midnight. We will crop, have coffee and snacks and their will be a raffle drawing. Cost of the raffle tickets will be $3 each or 2 for $5. The raffle gifts will be worth at least $20 (will will only do raffle if more than 3 people are participating in it).

I used those junk mail solicitations for credit cards, they always have those fake plastic credit cards. Some of them were clear, so I glued them down to patterened paper so the design would show through. I had to punch holes through the cards so I could add them to the book/album, it took alot of pressure!

Ok, so I took a few months off from challenges because very few people were participating… but I think that I’ll try bringing them back! (I’ve had some requests via e-mail)

Challenge #1 of the new year: Ugly Betty

No, I’m not talking about the TV show I enjoy, but rather your photos. Maybe they’re old (pre-digital), blurry, not all shiny and pretty like some of the ones you’ve been scrapping. Perhaps the colors are clashing or it’s just ugly. (but) This photo (or photos!) has heart, and holds a story that needs to be told in your scrapbook. Know what I’m talking about? Your challenge is to scrap one of them! (or more, if you like!) Focus on the story, and enjoy. My ‘ugly’ is shown above. Bad lighting, my sister is half cut off, there’s terrible wallpaper in the back… but it’s special. So it gets a page. (paper is Teresa Collins for Junkitz, stickers are Heidi Grace, chipboard letters Cloud 9, and pocket is 7gypsies)

I think as the first 07 challenge that I’m offering I should offer up a prize. So… I will draw a winner (RANDOMLY) for a new Fiskars rotary trimmer on 2/4. (you must enter by 2/3 midnight PST) Also, everyone who enters by 1/25 will get a package of rain dots. Sound good? There’s more! If your page features an especially cool idea or technique and I post it on the blog you’ll get bonus goodies!

Ok, sorry if that sounds real strict… but it’s going to be a CRAZY few weeks here with CHA and all, so I need you to follow directions and make it as smooth as possible for me. So take your time, and read the rules carefully!!!

Grandma's Dress

I took pieces of my grandmothers dress and glued them onto cardstock and cut them out. I used black bazzill cardstock and greenish colored die cuts with a view cardstock. I also used tea colored ink stain. Photo corners are with a creative memories corner punch. I also used a hole punch to punch two holes onto the cardstock and tie a piece of the dress through the holes.
I printed up the journaling on my computer:
Grandma's Dress
When I was a little Girl, I would sit next to my Grandma Ruth and Look at all the pretty horses and red birds on her dress. This was Grandma's favorite dress and she wore it quite often. Grandma gave me her sewing box before she died, and inside it she left me remnants of her favorite dress. I have cherished it for many years and will for many, many more.
